Today is the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The first National Breast Cancer Awareness program started back in 1985. Then it was just a week of public information about breast cancer and today, more than twenty years later, the entire month of October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
NBCAM is now an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection.
And in my community today, everywhere I look I see pink- I see people and stores and TV networks bringing awareness to this life changing disease.
I went out this morning to the local American Cancer Society thrift shop where I buy my books. The store was all done in pink- and I was given a pink ribbon pin after my purchase. I never had one before- I am proud to wear it and will everyday this month.
I then went to Staples to buy some office supplies, and there was a Susan G Komen Think Pink pad display at the checkout counter. I stopped at CVS drugstore, and saw the same thing.
I came home and turned on the television, and on the Ellen DeGeneres show she is teaming with Susan G Komen and New Balance Shoes all month to raise money for Breast Cancer. Liam Neeson was in a dunk tank for a $10,000 donation.
I watched the NBC nightly news, and the White House is lit in Pink this month!
We have all been affected by Breast Cancer in one way or another- and as a one and a half year survivor myself- I am really proud to be part of it.
